How many times have you actually sat down and asked yourself what it really takes to build something online? I’ve asked myself that question more times than I can count over the last few years, and I finally sat down and wrote out the honest answer.
I came online because I needed a change in my life. I’d watched somebody get robbed of their legacy, and it hit me hard enough that I decided I needed to build one of my own to leave behind. That decision turned into Wildfoot Explores, a brand I started from the cab of a truck with nothing but an idea and a reason to see it through.
Here’s the thing nobody tells you when you’re starting out. People only ever see the finished product. They see the website, the active page, the published books, the merch. What they don’t see is the fourteen hour trucking days, the ideas recorded through talk to text while I’m out on the road, or the articles that got almost no traffic before something finally clicked.
I joined Wealthy Affiliate in May 2024 as an Alberta oilfield truck driver with zero technical background. Not a writer, not a web developer, not an SEO guy, none of it. Just a husband, a father of five, and a third generation trucker with a vision and no map for how to actually get there.
Two years later, here’s where that vision stands. Wildfoot Explores pulled in more than 336,000 opportunities to be discovered last month alone, all organic, no ad spend. It’s grown into a brand with books, an audiobook, apparel, and a genuine community built around it. And in January 2027, I’m rolling out a full vendor booth and stepping into the trade show circuit, with a bigger dream sitting behind that of retiring in Revelstoke with a permanent shop, museum and escape room built around the whole thing.
None of that happened because I had it figured out from day one. It happened because I kept showing up, kept building inside the life I already had, and had a foundation under me that actually taught me how to do this instead of just doing it for me.
That’s the real difference. Wealthy Affiliate didn’t build Wildfoot Explores for me. It taught me how to build it myself, and that’s a distinction that matters more than people realize when they’re starting out.
